It's been a while since I've heard a ridiculous news story, well here's one for you...
Cadbury Own the Colour Purple!
Yep, thanks to a high court ruling Cadbury(Kraft) now has Pantone 2685c as a registered trademark. It only applies to choclate bar and drinks packaging but was there really a need to trademark it?
They actually won the ruling last December but where challenged by Nestlé, there appeal was that the colours could not be protected with a trademark. I agree with Nestlé, this ruling will only open the floodgates for other companies to follow suit. It'll get to the point where you'll have to brand your company on whatever colours are left out there because there all trademarks.
Cadbury may have been using the colour since 1914 but let's face it there's no mistaking Cadburys branding, it's already engrained in peoples minds (Much like Coca-Cola).
It's another issue that I'm seriously considering following up in this assignment purely because of the ridiculousness of it.
